Nigerian singer Jaywon has issued an apology to his colleague Ayra Starr after being accused of mocking her over her recent Grammy snub. The Grammy nominations for the 67th annual awards were announced, and despite her impressive achievements this year, Ayra Starr did not receive a nomination.
Shortly after the announcement, Jaywon, who has had previous online disagreements with Ayra Starr, shared a photo of himself holding two Grammy awards. This post was widely interpreted as a subtle dig at Starr, leading to significant backlash.
In response, Jaywon apologised, expressing admiration for Ayra Starr’s talent and calling her one of Africa’s finest female vocalists. He stated, “If you see Ayra Starr, tell her I’m sorry she wasn’t nominated for this year’s Grammys. I’m a huge fan of her music, and I believe she’s one of the best female vocalists Africa has.”
He further clarified that his intention is not to undermine others but to support and uplift fellow artists. Jaywon, who is a voting member of the Recording Academy, reiterated, “On this side, we don’t pull people down. We elevate, not just for today, but for the future.”
