Michael Carrick has emerged as the leading candidate to take over as Manchester United’s interim manager until the end of the season.
Club officials are keen to have a new appointment in place before players return to training on Wednesday. Carrick previously served as United’s caretaker manager in 2021 following the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, overseeing a three-match spell in which he recorded two wins and a draw.
He departed the role after the appointment of Ralf Rangnick as interim manager.
Solskjaer has also held face-to-face talks with the club about a potential return, with discussions taking place on Saturday.
United parted ways with Ruben Amorim on 5 January after 14 months in charge. Following his departure, former United and Scotland midfielder Darren Fletcher was handed temporary responsibility for the first team.
However, United’s 2–1 defeat to Brighton in the FA Cup third round on Sunday is expected to be Fletcher’s second and final match in charge.
