Nigerian forwards Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman have pledged to turn the nation’s World Cup disappointment into triumph at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Osimhen apologised to Nigerians for the team’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after losing to DR Congo in the play-offs, but vowed the squad would fight to make amends.
“AFCON is our chance to right our wrongs and show Super Eagles fans worldwide just what we can achieve,” the Galatasaray striker told photo-journalist PoojaMedia. “We’re truly sorry for not securing a World Cup ticket. I’ve seen the disappointment on so many faces, but life goes on, and this AFCON is our opportunity to succeed and win the tournament.”
Arguably Africa’s best centre-forward, Osimhen added that the team would “go to war” at the tournament, starting with Tuesday’s opener against Tanzania.
“It’s all about going to war. Tuesday is the first battle, and we’ll give everything. We’re not underestimating anyone in our group, but we believe we’re among the favourites in this tournament,” Osimhen told Kelechi Anyikude.
Lookman shared similar thoughts, telling Elegbete TV Sports that the squad must channel their World Cup setback into motivation.
“The World Cup outcome was disappointing for all of us and the nation. Hopefully, we can turn that pain into something positive and use it to drive us forward,” the Atalanta winger said. “Right now, my focus is on performing and helping the team in Morocco, bringing glory back home. Last time, we came so close in Abidjan but didn’t win, so maintaining the unity and togetherness in the squad is crucial.”
Nigeria last faced Tanzania at AFCON in 1980, winning 3-1 on the way to claiming their first continental title. The Super Eagles will be aiming for all three points when both sides meet at the Complexe Sportif de Fes on Tuesday.
