Rangers and Mourinho’s Fenerbahce Eliminated from Champions League

Rangers were eliminated from the Champions League on Tuesday after losing 2-0 to Dynamo Kyiv in the second leg of the third qualifying round. Meanwhile, José Mourinho’s Fenerbahce also exited the competition, falling to Lille.

The hosts, Rangers, faced a setback when defender Jefte received a harsh second yellow card, leaving his team short-handed. Dynamo capitalised on this advantage, scoring twice in the last ten minutes through substitutes Oleksandr Pikhalonok and Nazar Voloshyn.

Rangers coach Philippe Clement criticised the referee’s decision that reduced his team to ten players. “It’s tough for my team,” Clement told BBC Scotland. “They don’t deserve this after two hard-fought games against Dynamo Kyiv. One decision from one person has drastically altered our outcome.”

Clement further remarked, “In my over 30-year career, this is only the second time I’ve witnessed such injustice. We have to accept it and focus on the league and the Europa League moving forward.”

The coach, who is in the process of revamping his squad to challenge Celtic, noted that the loss would significantly impact the club’s finances. “Financially, it’s a major setback for the club. It will affect our transfer plans as well. I don’t expect this rebuild to be completed quickly.”

Dynamo Kyiv advanced with a 3-1 aggregate score and will face Salzburg in the next round. Salzburg moved forward after a 3-3 draw in the return leg, resulting in a 5-4 aggregate victory over FC Twente.

Jonathan David’s penalty secured Lille’s place in the next round, granting them a 3-2 aggregate win in Turkey, and marking a disappointing beginning for Mourinho’s tenure at Fenerbahce. Fenerbahce had lost the first leg 2-1 last week but seemed to be heading out of the competition until a late own goal by Bafode Diakite pushed the match into extra time.

Lille substitute Aïssa Mandi, making his debut, was sent off for a reckless challenge on İrfan Can Kahveci. However, the visitors were awarded a penalty for a handball by Jayden Oosterwolde, which David converted successfully.

Cenk Tosun then hit the crossbar, but Lille held on to their lead. Their victory sets up a meeting with Slavia Prague, who defeated Union Saint-Gilloise 4-1 on aggregate.

Elsewhere, Slovan Bratislava, who began their journey in the first qualifying round, defeated APOEL Nicosia 2-0 over two legs. They will face Midtjylland for a spot in the revamped 36-team tournament, after the Danish champions overcame Hungary’s Ferencváros 3-1 on aggregate.

Norwegian champions Bodø/Glimt advanced comfortably with a 4-1 victory over Poland’s Jagiellonia Białystok, resulting in a 5-1 aggregate win.

Sweden’s Malmö FF won a dramatic encounter with PAOK, scoring late in Greece to force extra time and then winning the second leg 4-3 to advance 6-5 on aggregate.

Sparta Prague defeated Romania’s FCSB 4-3 on aggregate, while Qarabag pulled off a remarkable comeback against Ludogorets, scoring four goals in extra time to secure a stunning 7-2 victory in Bulgaria.

Switzerland international Kwadwo Duah scored twice on the night to give Ludogorets a 4-2 lead in the tie, but the visitors from Azerbaijan rallied with six unanswered goals, cruising to an 8-4 aggregate triumph.
