Veteran UFC referee Marc Goddard has praised the epic middleweight battle between Israel Adesanya and Kelvin Gastelum as the greatest fight he has ever officiated.
Speaking to talkSPORT MMA, Goddard highlighted the co-main event of UFC 236 in Atlanta as his most unforgettable moment inside the Octagon.
The British referee, known for overseeing many iconic bouts, described the interim middleweight title fight as an “ungodly” showcase of heart and skill.
“Every day of the week, twice on a Sunday, it’s Israel Adesanya and Kelvin Gastelum,” Goddard stated when asked about his top fight. “I couldn’t believe what I was witnessing unfold in front of me.” He shared how deeply moved he was by the fighters’ extraordinary determination, recalling a powerful moment before the final round when Adesanya declared, “I’m prepared to die.”
“You had two guys who simply refused to back down,” Goddard explained. “They reached the deepest, darkest parts of their soul and fought through unimaginable depths, and I was right there with them.”
Goddard admitted that the intensity of the bout left a lasting impression on him, saying, “I’ve shed tears rewatching that fight because it was ungodly what those two men accomplished.”
The five-round war, which Adesanya won by unanimous decision, is widely regarded as one of the greatest fights in UFC history, with Goddard’s emotional reflection adding to its legendary status in mixed martial arts.
