Leicester secured a crucial victory over Birmingham with a late goal, reclaiming their position at the top of the Championship promotion race on Saturday. Meanwhile, both Ipswich and Leeds stumbled in their respective matches.
Stephy Mavididi’s decisive header in the closing stages sealed a hard-fought 2-1 win for Leicester, propelling them to 88 points with six matches left in the season. This placed them one point ahead of Ipswich and two points clear of Leeds, although both rivals have played an additional game.
Ipswich suffered a 1-0 defeat to local rivals Norwich in the early kick-off, courtesy of a first-half free-kick from Marcelino Nunez. On the other hand, Leeds missed out on the opportunity to seize the top spot, succumbing to a 2-1 loss against Coventry – their first defeat in 16 league games.
Despite Birmingham’s valiant effort to secure a point at Leicester’s King Power Stadium, Jay Stansfield’s equalizer was ultimately in vain. Stephy Mavididi’s late heroics ensured Leicester’s dominant performance did not go unrewarded, sealing the vital three points.
These results came as a huge relief for Leicester, who had previously held a commanding lead at the top of the table before enduring a challenging run of form, managing just one win in their last six league games.
In the clash between Coventry and Leeds, Ellis Simms opened the scoring for Coventry in the ninth minute, followed by Haji Wright’s brilliant finish shortly after halftime, putting the home side in control. Although Joel Piroe provided Leeds with hope with a goal late in the match, Coventry held on for the win, closing the gap to the top six to just four points.
Elsewhere, Southampton played out a goalless draw against Blackburn, while Stoke City staged an impressive comeback from two goals down to salvage a point against promotion-chasing West Brom.
At the bottom of the table, Sheffield Wednesday secured a vital three points with a 2-0 win over QPR, keeping alive their hopes of avoiding relegation.
