A 76-year-old man bitten by a rat in a toilet is hospitalized for organ failure caused by a bacterial infection.

A Canadian man’s encounter with a rat dwelling in his toilet led to a harrowing ordeal of organ failure and sepsis after the rodent sank its teeth into his hand. The 76-year-old individual’s attempt to remove the rat resulted in the creature biting two of his fingers. Despite initially seeking medical attention and receiving basic wound care along with a tetanus booster, his condition took a drastic turn 18 days later. Suffering from symptoms such as fever, headaches, and abdominal pain persisting for three days, he returned to the emergency room, where medical tests revealed alarming results. His heart rate was elevated, blood pressure lowered, and kidneys damaged, indicative of multi-organ dysfunction and sepsis, necessitating admission to the intensive care unit.

Although his bite wounds had mostly healed, doctors suspected a correlation between his deteriorating health and the previous rat encounter. Further investigations, including blood and urine tests, confirmed the presence of leptospirosis, a bacterial infection often transmitted to humans through animals like rats, with potentially fatal consequences in severe cases. The bacteria, commonly found in animal urine, likely entered the man’s body through the broken skin caused by the rat’s bite. Prompt medical intervention ensued, involving treatment with antibiotics and steroids, leading to his eventual discharge from the ICU after three days.

Leptospirosis poses a significant global health concern, with over 1 million reported cases annually, and nearly 60,000 resulting in fatalities. This incident underscores the potential dangers associated with interactions between humans and urban wildlife, emphasizing the importance of awareness and preventive measures to mitigate such risks.
