A US-based Nigerian doctor has allegedly taken his own life over a $15,000 child support debt.

A 36-year-old Nigerian cardiologist based in the United States, Dr. Ikenna Erinne, reportedly took his own life following a child support case against his ex-wife. The incident occurred on Sunday, January 26.

The Anambra State-born doctor had been involved in a lengthy divorce battle, which included a dispute over the custody of their children. The court ruled in favor of his ex-wife, ordering him to pay $15,000 in monthly child support. The financial burden of the ruling reportedly contributed to his tragic death.

Clayton Udo, a Nigerian-American, confirmed the incident on X.com, criticizing the legal system for disproportionately affecting African men. He explained that Dr. Erinne had already spent thousands of dollars in legal fees before the verdict, which also led to the loss of his medical license. Udo stated, “He shot himself to death. He spent thousands of dollars in legal fees – wasted money. I am talking about a process that impoverishes you. You go to court and they take all your money.”

Another community member, Obim Onujiogu, also confirmed Dr. Erinne’s death on Facebook, remembering him as a compassionate healer and devoted family man. He added that Dr. Erinne is survived by his children, parents, and siblings, and his funeral will be held on Monday, February 3, 2025, in Maryland.

The memorial service will take place at Gary L. Kaufman Funeral Home, followed by interment at Meadowridge Memorial Park.
