AFCON 2021: Liverpool directs Mane not to play for Senegal against Equatorial Guinea

by Admin

Liverpool has asked Sadio Mane to sit out Senegal’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final against Equatorial Guinea, the Daily Mail reports.

This follows the player’s concussion scare against Cape Verde in the round of 16.

Mane appeared to have been knocked out following a nasty clash of heads with Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha, who was sent off.

He, however, played on and even scored the first goal before staggering off the field.

His Premier League club has now urged him not to feature in Sunday’s clash with Equatorial Guinea to protect his health, even with x-rays showing no signs of serious injury.

Liverpool, however, does not have the power to make a decision on whether Mane plays or not, but they have contacted the Senegalese authorities to make their feelings clear.

Mane’s opener against Cape Verde was his 27th strike in 82 appearances for Senegal, while he boasts 10 in all competitions for Jurgen Klopp’s side this term.
