Interim Super Eagles coach Augustine Eguavoen has expressed strong confidence in the team’s ability to overcome any opponent, highlighting the exceptional quality of his players.
Eguavoen made these remarks following his team’s 3-0 victory over the Cheetahs of Benin Republic in the 2025 African Cup of Nations at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on Saturday.
“We have quality players who can beat any team, though we respect all our opponents. Any coach could come in and achieve the same results with the Super Eagles,” Eguavoen stated.
He attributed the win to the tactical formation chosen by the technical staff, noting that the team can succeed with any formation. “We can use any system. I’ve thought it over, and with the calibre of players we have, we can adapt to any formation. Football involves winning, losing, and drawing; I don’t believe we’ve had a poor result,” he added.
Eguavoen praised the defence’s performance as superb and mentioned that the team had been training together for a week. He explained that asking six players to warm up for the second half was a strategic move to manage time and avoid rushing changes.
He acknowledged the Cheetahs of Benin Republic as a good team with a solid game plan.
Eguavoen was appointed interim coach after the deal between the Nigeria Football Federation and German coach Bruno Labbadia fell through due to stringent German tax regulations.
