by Admin

The Argentinian national team holds the number 10 shirt in high regard, with soccer greats like Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi leaving an indelible mark while wearing it. Yet, they have monumental plans for this iconic jersey. They will formally retire the number when Messi steps away from the national team. In football, specific numbers carry immense symbolism, none more than the revered number 10, especially in Argentina. From Maradona’s heroics to Messi’s reign, this number represents a legacy of unparalleled significance.

Sporting the number 10 signifies not just skills but leadership on the field. Throughout football’s history, those who wore this number became pivotal figures and inspirations for their teams. Amid ongoing speculation about who will inherit the No. 10 jersey once Messi steps down, recent reports suggest an end to the debate. AFA president Claudio Tapia reportedly decided to retire the No. 10 shirt when the 36-year-old legend eventually concludes his international career. This decision is a heartfelt gesture from the federation, a fitting tribute to Messi’s enduring brilliance even at 36 years old.

“When Messi retires from the national team, we will not allow anyone else to wear the number 10 after him. This number ’10’ will be retired for life in his honour. It’s the least we can do for him,” stated AFA president Tapia in an interview with an Argentine newspaper, as reported by MARCA.

In the wake of Argentina’s recent triumph at the World Cup in Qatar, AFA president Claudio Tapia announced the official retirement of the number 10 jersey. This symbolic step pays tribute to Messi’s illustrious career, spanning 180 appearances, 106 goals, and monumental achievements like the 2021 Copa America victory and the pinnacle moment – winning the 2022 World Cup. These feats firmly establish Messi among football’s most revered legends, standing shoulder to shoulder with Maradona and Pelé.
