Victor Boniface redeemed himself from an early penalty miss to score the winning goal for Bayer Leverkusen, securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt at the BayArena on Saturday.
The Nigerian striker, who has been in outstanding form since joining the German club in the summer of 2023, displayed his resilience and determination in a match that highlighted his growing significance to Xabi Alonso’s team.
Boniface’s eventful afternoon began with a chance to give Leverkusen the lead early in the game. The hosts were awarded a penalty after Amine Adli was fouled by Junior Dina Ebimbe in the box. However, Boniface, typically reliable from the spot, had his tame kick saved by Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp, briefly dampening the spirits of the home crowd.
The missed penalty seemed to invigorate the visitors, who took the lead through Omar Marmoush. The Bundesliga’s top scorer continued his impressive form, scoring from the penalty spot for the sixth consecutive league match after Robert Andrich committed a foul in the area.
Leverkusen, known for their resilience under Alonso, fought back to equalise before halftime. Andrich made amends for his earlier error, finishing a well-executed move with a precise low shot into the far corner.
In the second half, Boniface became central to Leverkusen’s relentless attack on the Frankfurt goal, thwarted several times by the outstanding Trapp. As the match progressed, Leverkusen’s dominance grew. Andrich struck the post, and Boniface continued to test the Frankfurt defence in search of the decisive goal.
The breakthrough finally came when Florian Wirtz’s cross was only partially cleared by Trapp, allowing Boniface to head home, igniting jubilant celebrations at the BayArena.
