Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface has expressed his excitement about being nominated for a spot in the 2023/24 Bundesliga Team of the Season, PUNCH Sports Extra reports. The nominees were announced on the league’s website Wednesday, and Boniface’s club, Bayer Leverkusen, shared their eight shortlisted players on X (formerly Twitter) Thursday.
“He scores goals, Boniface!” the club posted on social media. Boniface reshared the post, adding, “Not bad for my first season.”
The 23-year-old was selected alongside five goalkeepers, 10 defenders, 15 midfielders, and nine other attackers. The German top-flight website stated all players were chosen based on official Bundesliga statistics.
Despite a three-month break due to a groin injury in January while training for the African Cup of Nations with the Super Eagles, Boniface made the list. He didn’t play for Bayer Leverkusen again until April.
In 18 league games, he contributed 11 goals and nine assists as Leverkusen clinched their first Bundesliga title with five games remaining while staying unbeaten. Boniface was named the Bundesliga Rookie of the Month from August to December 2023.
Joining Boniface on the nomination list were seven other Leverkusen players: Granit Xhaka, Jeremy Frimpong, Alejandro Grimaldo, Florian Wirtz, Jonathan Tah, Exequiel Palacios, and Lukas Hradecky.
