At least 10 people have reportedly lost their lives, with many others injured, following a stampede at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, on Saturday morning.
This tragedy comes just days after a similar incident in Ibadan, Oyo State, where a stampede at a children’s funfair claimed the lives of at least 35 children and left six critically injured.
According to reports, the Abuja stampede occurred as residents scrambled to collect palliatives being distributed by the church. The event, aimed at providing relief to struggling residents, attracted a large crowd, primarily from Mpape, Gishiri Village, and other nearby areas.
Eyewitnesses stated that the incident happened between 7 am and 8 am when the crowd surged forward to access the palliatives. Efforts to reach Nkechi Isa, spokesperson for the FCT Emergency Management Department, for further details have so far been unsuccessful.
