Nigeria’s Super Falcons secured a place in the final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Tuesday with a dramatic 2-1 win over South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in a tense and high-energy semi-final.
Rasheedat Ajibade opened the scoring in the 45th minute, converting a penalty to give Nigeria a 1-0 lead just before halftime. South Africa, who lost key striker Hildah Magaia to injury in the 26th minute, responded in the second half. Linda Motlhalo levelled the score from the penalty spot in the 60th minute.
With the game heading toward extra time, Michelle Alozie produced a late winner in the 94th minute, finishing off a well-timed assist from Esther Okoronkwo to send the Super Falcons into the final.
Both teams made key substitutions that added to the match’s intensity and physicality, but Nigeria’s composure in the closing moments proved decisive.
The victory continues Nigeria’s strong run in the tournament and brings them one step closer to adding another WAFCON title to their record.
