Nigerians living in South Africa have mobilised in full force to back the Super Eagles ahead of today’s decisive FIFA World Cup qualifier against Bafana Bafana in Bloemfontein.
Dr Frank Onyekwelu, President-General of the Nigerian Citizens Association in South Africa (NICASA), confirmed this in a phone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Lagos.
“We are hungry for victory and for Nigeria’s qualification for the World Cup. Nigerians here in South Africa have been fully mobilised to come out and support the Super Eagles in today’s match,” he said.
Onyekwelu explained that in recent weeks, NICASA has worked closely with the Nigerian Consulate in South Africa to sensitise the community on the importance of rallying behind the national team.
“Games between Nigeria and South Africa often carry the feeling of a rivalry, but we trust this won’t spark unnecessary tension,” he added.
He further stated that the union has been promoting the “power of Mbotu”—a spirit of African openness and unity—to encourage harmony among fans.
“We have been preaching tolerance, patriotism, and law-abiding behaviour among Nigerians,” he noted.
According to him, NICASA has also been in contact with local law enforcement and security agencies to ensure peace and safety before, during, and after the game.
“The union has urged Nigerians to live decently and avoid provocation or confrontation around this crucial fixture,” he said.
Onyekwelu expressed optimism about the team’s performance, assuring that the players will feel the unwavering support of Nigerians in South Africa.
“One thing is certain—the Super Eagles will hear, see, and feel our support. We shall spur them on to victory,” he affirmed.
Nigeria currently sit on 10 points after Saturday’s 1-0 win against Rwanda, just one point behind second-placed Benin. South Africa lead the group with 16 points from seven matches following their 3-0 triumph over Lesotho.
