Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has downplayed speculation of a crisis meeting with co-owner Jim Ratcliffe, insisting their recent talks were simply routine discussions despite the club’s difficult start to the season.
United have managed just four points from their opening four Premier League matches and suffered a humiliating League Cup exit to fourth-tier Grimsby. Since taking charge last November, Amorim has overseen only eight wins in 31 league games.
The former Sporting Lisbon boss revealed Ratcliffe reassured him of the board’s commitment to a long-term project. “A new contract,” Amorim joked when asked what was discussed. “No, it’s normal things — just showing support and explaining that it’s a long project.”
United finished 15th in the Premier League last season, their lowest top-flight finish since 1973-74, and missed out on Champions League qualification after losing the Europa League final to Tottenham.
Despite the setbacks, Amorim expressed optimism, saying the team is improving but needs to be more decisive. “We are playing well until the boxes, defending and attacking, but we must be more aggressive and clinical. Compared to last year, I think we’re in a better place. But again, we need to win,” he said.
Looking ahead, United face Chelsea at Old Trafford on Saturday, with Mason Mount and Matheus Cunha both set to return from injury and bolster the squad.
