Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has signalled that the club should prepare for his eventual departure, even as questions remain over whether he will stay beyond next season.g
Despite signing a contract extension in November 2024 that runs until the end of the 2026–27 season, the 54-year-old acknowledged that no manager stays forever. “Sooner or later, I will quit Manchester City,” Guardiola said, adding that he is happy with his current situation. “I have 18 months, and I am very happy. The club and I are well connected, and what is going to happen will happen.”
He confirmed there are no discussions about leaving before his contract ends. “There are no discussions, end of the subject. But the club has to be prepared for everything, players, CEOs, everyone, except the owners,” he stated.
Since joining City in 2016, Guardiola has become the club’s most successful manager, leading them to six Premier League titles and the 2022–23 Champions League, among numerous other trophies.
Speculation over potential successors has included Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, a former Guardiola assistant at City, but Maresca dismissed the reports as “100% speculation,” saying his focus remains entirely on Chelsea.
Manchester City are currently two points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal and will host West Ham United on Saturday, while Chelsea, in fourth, face Newcastle United earlier in the day.
Guardiola’s remarks highlight City’s long-term planning while reaffirming his short-term commitment as the club continues its push for domestic and European honours.
