France formally recognises the State of Palestine

by Admin

French President Emmanuel Macron has announced in New York that France now officially recognises the State of Palestine, describing the move as “the best way to preserve the chances for lasting peace in the region.”

Macron said the decision was intended to “break the cycle of destruction” and “pave the way for peace before it becomes impossible for a long time.”

With this step, France becomes one of at least 145 UN member states that recognise Palestine, following similar announcements from the UK, Australia, Canada, and Portugal in recent days. Other European countries, including Belgium, Luxembourg, Malta, Andorra, and San Marino, are also expected to follow.

The move means that four of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council now recognise a Palestinian state — China and Russia since the 1980s, and France today. The United States remains opposed, dismissing the decision as “purely symbolic.”

In an interview with Israeli media, Macron criticised Israel’s military actions in Gaza, warning they “totally destroy Israel’s credibility.” He expressed hope that France’s recognition would help spark fresh peace efforts.

The decision, coordinated with Saudi Arabia and linked to the New York Declaration signed earlier this month by 142 UN states, also echoes international calls for a Gaza ceasefire, the release of hostages, and the establishment of a viable Palestinian state.

Reactions have been sharply divided: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the recognition as a “huge reward for terrorism,” while the Palestinian Authority welcomed it as a “historic step” that puts France “on the right side of history.” Inside France, at least 86 municipalities raised the Palestinian flag in solidarity on Monday, openly defying the Interior Ministry.
