US Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to call President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday to concede the 2024 presidential race, according to two aides who spoke with NBC News. She is also set to address the nation publicly, with her speech scheduled for 4 p.m. ET at Howard University, her alma mater. One of her aides mentioned that she is still finalising her speech. Additionally, President Joe Biden plans to call Trump on Wednesday and speak publicly about the election results, as confirmed by a White House official.
Biden’s response to Trump’s victory will include actions that Trump did not take when Biden won in 2020, including a congratulatory call, an invitation to the White House, and an offer to attend Trump’s inauguration.
Trump claimed victory early Wednesday, November 6, just after 5:30 a.m. ET, securing 276 electoral votes to Harris’ 223. He declared his win around 2:30 a.m. during a speech at an election party in Florida.
Harris, 60, entered the race for president after Biden, 81, withdrew on July 21 and endorsed her as the Democratic nominee. Biden dropped out following his poor performance in a June debate against Trump, after which key Democratic figures expressed concerns about his age and ability to win and serve another four years.
While Harris had about three months to campaign, Trump launched his re-election bid shortly after the 2022 midterm elections in November. Trump won re-election despite facing serious legal challenges, including 34 felony counts related to a New York hush-money case and his role in attempting to overturn the 2020 election, which culminated in the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack.
