Kenyan President William Ruto has expressed his support for U.S. President Donald Trump’s executive order declaring official recognition of only two genders—male and female—by the U.S. government.
Speaking on Sunday, January 26, 2025, after a church service at the Global Cathedral in Nairobi, Ruto praised the policy shift, noting its alignment with Kenya’s cultural and religious values. He highlighted that the move to end diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives supporting other gender identities reflects Kenyan beliefs. “We are very proud. Contrary to what has been happening in the past, this year brought some welcomed developments from the United States, a leading democracy. Their policy direction supports what we believe in—that boys must remain boys, men must remain men, and women must remain women and girls must remain girls,” Ruto stated.
He further emphasised that recognising only two genders is consistent with biblical teachings and Kenyan traditions. “We thank God that the first major news from the United States this year confirms what the Bible teaches, what our faith believes, and what our traditions are rooted in,” he added.
President Donald Trump, after his inauguration, swiftly reversed policies from his predecessor, Joe Biden, which had aimed to protect against gender identity discrimination and promote transgender rights.
