In an editorial published on Friday, The New York Times, America’s most influential newspaper, urged President Joe Biden to step aside and let another Democrat challenge Donald Trump in the upcoming November election.
The editorial board, which operates independently of the newsroom, described Biden as “the shadow of a great public servant.” It argued that Thursday’s debate between Biden and Trump demonstrated the 81-year-old president “failed his own test.”
The board called Biden’s decision to seek re-election a “reckless gamble,” and suggested that “the greatest public service Mr. Biden can now perform is to announce that he will not continue to run for re-election.”
