Pinnick hails FIFA appointment as recognition of Nigeria’s growing football influence

by Admin

The Deputy Chair of the FIFA Men’s National Teams Competitions Committee, Amaju Pinnick, has described his appointment as a recognition of Nigeria’s growing influence in global sports governance.

In an interview with ARISE News on Thursday, Pinnick — a former President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) — expressed humility and pride at being selected to serve on one of FIFA’s most strategic committees.

“The importance of this is a recognition of Nigeria, as well as global sports. I’m humbled by the opportunity. The Competitions Committee is the most important because FIFA is all about organising competitions, including the World Cup, U-20, U-17, and even the Club World Cup,” he explained.

Pinnick outlined the committee’s core responsibilities, noting that it oversees FIFA’s global tournaments and supervises the participation of national teams. “It’s a committee that works closely with national teams and their players, ensuring their eligibility for these competitions,” he added.

He also highlighted the diversity and experience of his colleagues, mentioning South Africa’s Danny Jordaan — the chairman of the 2010 World Cup — as one of the members. According to Pinnick, the appointment reflects the international nature of football governance and FIFA’s commitment to excellence.

“FIFA doesn’t make appointments based on nationality or regionalism. It’s about merit, professionalism, and organisational standards,” he said.

Pinnick expressed pride in representing Nigeria on the global stage, saying, “I’m humbled and glad to be here because once again, I’m flying the Green White Green in FIFA’s books.”

He further revealed that several other Nigerians are serving in key FIFA committees — including the NFF president on the Interclub Committee and a former Women’s League chairperson on the Communications Committee. He also serves on FIFA’s Anti-Racism and Anti-Discrimination Committee, which he described as an honour.

“It’s not just about me. Nigeria is being recognised globally, and we’re proud of that,” he said.

On the home front, Pinnick noted ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigerian sports administration, stating that he is working closely with the National Sports Commission and the NFF to improve local football development.

Pinnick’s appointment, confirmed during the 74th FIFA Congress held in Bangkok, Thailand, further underscores Nigeria’s expanding role in international football governance. The committee oversees all FIFA national team competitions, including the World Cup, U-20 and U-17 tournaments, and the Club World Cup — marking another milestone in Pinnick’s distinguished career.
