US President Donald Trump has announced a one-month pause on tariffs targeting Mexican imports following an agreement with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to deploy 10,000 troops to the U.S.-Mexico border to combat fentanyl trafficking.
Trump shared the update on Truth Social on Monday, January 3, stating that he and Sheinbaum had reached an immediate agreement to delay the tariffs.
“I just spoke with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico. It was a very friendly conversation wherein she agreed to immediately supply 10,000 Mexican Soldiers on the Border separating Mexico and the United States,” Trump wrote.
“These soldiers will be specifically designated to stop the flow of fentanyl and illegal migrants into our Country,” he added.
Trump also announced that negotiations will take place over the next month, led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, along with high-level Mexican representatives.
Sheinbaum confirmed the agreement on social media, stating that Mexico will immediately reinforce its border security while the U.S. commits to preventing the trafficking of high-powered weapons into Mexico.
The 25% tariffs on Mexican imports were initially set to take effect on Tuesday, with Trump citing illegal immigration and fentanyl smuggling as the primary reasons for their implementation.
