Military Chief Warns of Intervention if #EndBadGovernance Protests Escalate

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) has announced that the military will intervene if the ongoing nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests continue to turn violent.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on August 2, the Army chief urged protesters to recognize that destruction is counterproductive and would only set the nation back.

“We should realize that these destructions and the funds required to rebuild will divert money needed for development. Instead of causing harm, we should come together to ensure nothing is destroyed. This statement has already been communicated to local, state, and federal governments.

We want to warn those who are recalcitrant and refuse to listen that we will not stand by and watch our country be destroyed. We will take professional action, and anyone caught will be taken to court.

Let us avoid anything that will bring mayhem to our communities. We have seen the level of destruction carried out just yesterday. If this continues, the armed forces and the entire military security agencies will not stand by and let it persist.”

The military chief also called on the media to reduce coverage of the protests, stating that some protesters are merely seeking screen time.

“I noticed that all the stations were hooked on the events yesterday. This is not an election; don’t give them that coverage because some are just looking for moments of being on the screen,” he said.

The End Bad Governance protests, which began across the country on Monday, August 1, have resulted in mass destruction and looting of private and public properties in some states, particularly in the North.
