Manchester City midfielder Rodri has responded to Cristiano Ronaldo’s criticism of the Ballon d’Or organisers, after Ronaldo expressed dissatisfaction with Rodri being awarded the prize over Vinicius Jr.
The Premier League and Euro 2024 champion was named the best men’s player in a close contest with Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr, who, along with his teammates, chose not to attend the ceremony after learning he would not win.
Despite Rodri’s pivotal role in successful campaigns for both club and country, Ronaldo, a five-time Ballon d’Or winner, called it “unfair” that Vinicius was overlooked, highlighting the Brazilian’s contributions to Real Madrid’s La Liga and Champions League victories.
The Ballon d’Or is determined by votes from journalists in an open and democratic process, and Rodri admitted he found Ronaldo’s comments surprising.
Speaking to Diario AS, Rodri remarked, “[Ronaldo] knows better than anyone how this award works and how the winner is chosen. This year, the journalists who vote decided I should win. Interestingly, these are likely the same journalists who, at one time, voted for him, and I imagine he had no objections then.”
Rodri’s measured response highlights his respect for the process and his gratitude for the recognition.
