A stray bullet has allegedly killed a student on his way to sit for the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.

The incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday along Gbagi Market Road in the Egbeda Local Government Area, when a police officer pursuing a suspect allegedly opened fire, with one of the bullets striking the student.

Findings revealed that the student was riding on a motorcycle with his father and twin brother when the bullet hit him. According to multiple eyewitnesses, he was on his way to the examination centre.

One of the witnesses, identified simply as Ajani, said, “A police officer opened fire while chasing a fleeing vehicle. One of the bullets hit the student, who was on a motorcycle with his father and twin brother. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.”

Another eyewitness added, “The deceased was heading to the examination centre with his twin brother when the incident occurred.”

Following the tragedy, angry youths took the student’s body to the Oyo State Secretariat in Agodi, Ibadan, demanding justice and calling on Governor Seyi Makinde to take action.

The student’s remains have since been deposited at the Adeoyo Hospital mortuary.

As of the time of filing this report, no official statement had been released by the authorities regarding the incident.
