Akon has dismissed claims that his ambitious “Akon City” project in Senegal has been cancelled, calling the reports exaggerated and driven by critics hoping it fails.
Speaking to TMZ Hip Hop in New York, the singer and entrepreneur gave an update on the futuristic city he’s been working on for over a decade.
He also shared that his upcoming country album is about 60% complete. Akon said he’s taking his time with the project to honour the country music community, spending time in Nashville with Rascal Flatts’ Gary LeVox to ensure it captures an authentic sound.
Estimated at $6 billion, “Akon City” was partly inspired by Marvel’s Black Panther and is envisioned as a cutting-edge, sustainable city in Africa. Akon accused unnamed “haters” or “Killmongers” of spreading false information in an attempt to derail the project. But he remained steadfast, pledging to protect the city and his celebrity backers from those trying to block progress in Africa.
Building a city takes time, Akon said, and he remains committed to bringing “Akon City” to life—no matter the obstacles.
