I came to Finland one month ago to do an Erasmus exchange. The whole month here has been a dream come true experience for me since I’ve wanted to come to Finland for such a long time now. Everything has been going well so far. The only struggle I faced was accommodation. Just before my flight to Helsinki my long term airbnb room was cancelled and I had no place to stay. I posted my story on one of the facebook groups, where people offer and look for rooms and apartments. I received a lot of support and found a place for a short term. This whole month I spent on looking for a new place, which is really challenging considering all the circumstances. Then I found this one wonderful offer in Espoo and that’s how it started. Just like the other offers I saved it immediately and send a message to person who posted it. They gave me a response a few days later, claiming that the offer they posted was the apartment that their parents bought for their time of studies, but they moved back to Spain so now they rent it. Since they claimed, the apartment belongs to their parents, they gave me a contact number to their parent. I contacted them via WhatsApp (now I can see, that it was at that point where I should’ve started to pay more attention and be more cautious. They told me their name was Claudia, gave me the address of the place, confirmed the story their “daughter” told me as well. They introduced me to all the costs and said they will manage the process through airbnb since it’s safer for both of us and of course I trusted them, because I thought absolutely the same. I already had a problem with my previous apartment, but airbnb managed it really well. They wanted to know something about me before the whole process, and how many people I want to live there with. I told them a little bit about myself and then the introduced me to the whole process. Everything looked really legit, just like the airbnb would do it. The price wasn’t suspicious to me (was in fact lower from the other offers, but not incredibly low+ it was located in Espoo, and booked long term so it all made sense) The link they sent me (first mistake, never click any links, just search the place on the listing and do all the conversations through airbnb chat) looked okay, website looked safe, there was a locker in the corner, I could really do all the things just like on the real one. I could book the apartment, get a discount for a long term stay, I read the opinions, I checked the profile (it was verified) the address, everything, I mean EVERYTHING was the perfect impression of it. I could save the apartment on my wish lists, I saw my profile there.
I was so focused on just getting a place finally, like I said, it’s been a very intense month of searching the affordable place to stay. It was all I wanted, to have it done and feel safe so I can focus on my studies fully and experiencing the best sides of the exchange. They also offered the viewing of the apartment after the reservation, so in any case I could always cancel it. Unfortunately because of my quick decision I did a reservation and was asked to pay. This is another thing I missed, airbnb wouldn’t ask for deposit (it was included in the fee listing) and they wouldn’t ask for a bank transfer, especially since you can attach your card to the account or pay through paypal or other ways. But it felt okay, cause I already did payments like that and got a place so I wasn’t worried about it. After the transfer I received a booking confirmation on my email, I got an invoice (again, perfect impression of it) and I felt happy and relieved about having an accommodation and one worry less. Little did I know how badly scammed I was. The next day I got another e-mail from “airbnb” saying that they had some issues with processing the payments, so in few days I should get my refund back, directly to my bank account. Of course I was frustrated, cause I felt like it was happening again ( a month ago a faced the same issue), but since it’s airbnb I trusted they would give me my money back, just like they did the last time.
Few days later I still haven’t got my refund back so I was becoming more anxious and started to feel something is off, but still had a faith, cause my previous experience included some delays as well. But it’s been too long now. Few days later I wok up in the morning and checked my instagram. A friend of mine posted on their story about airbnb scams, how they do it, when and to be really careful about making any reservations.I almost fainted. That was the moment I realized I am a victim of a fraud and that I just lost over 2000 euros… I reached out to “the owner” of the apartment and I noticed they profile picture was gone. They stopped responding. The apartment wasn’t on my wish list anymore. There was no apartment on the airbnb listings. The link they sent me stopped working as well. I was afraid. My heart was pounding I couldn’t believe in what had happened. I called airbnb right away. Since the conversation wasn’t held on their website they couldn’t help me. They had no track neither of the person nor the apartment. They were powerless. I called the bank, made a complaint but after making a transfer and not just being charged from the card it’s almost impossible to get it back. I went to the police and reported a crime as well. I also had to invalidate my passport, since airbnb used it to verify my account, and the scammers had my e-mail. I had no idea what other things they could do using my personal information. The worst thing is that they didn’t ask me to pay the whole thing. They asked me to pay for one month with a deposit and If I wanted I could the whole thing. I made that decision since it made sense to book all in advance, cause it was cheaper and now I am left with no money and no apartment.
Currently I am seeking any help, financial, accommodation wise and emotional as well. I am looking for a job so I can pay for living. It was a lot of money and considering I am just a student on exchange from Poland it’s even more. But yeah, that’s my story.
