The Benue State Police Command has confirmed that 11 people were rescued after a tragic boat accident on River Benue, which claimed 20 lives in Agatu Local Government Area.
The incident occurred on Saturday night when a wooden canoe carrying traders to Odenyi in Nasarawa State capsized after hitting a tree in the middle of the river.
The victims, who had just finished trading at the Ocholonya market in Agatu LGA, began their journey around 8 pm. Reports suggest the canoe was overloaded, and despite warnings, passengers insisted on proceeding as they were eager to return home.
Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Catherine Anene, confirmed that 20 bodies have been recovered, while 11 survivors have been rescued. She added that rescue efforts are ongoing.
