Nigeria has fully settled its financial obligations to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) by paying 100% of its community levy for 2023.
The $85.54 billion payment also covers the levy for 2024 up to July. The announcement was made by ECOWAS Commission President Dr. Omar Touray during the 66th Ordinary Summit of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government at the State House in Abuja on Sunday. Dr. Touray expressed appreciation for Nigeria’s commitment, calling it a significant achievement.
“This marks the first time in 19 years that Nigeria has met its obligations in full. This extraordinary contribution reflects the leadership and dedication of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the government, and the people of Nigeria to the ECOWAS community,” he stated.
The payment, completed on Friday, December 13, 2024, underscores Nigeria’s commitment to regional integration and cooperation.
This milestone is expected to enhance ECOWAS’ ability to tackle regional challenges and implement its programmes effectively, strengthening the bond between Nigeria and the West African bloc.
