Two former Werder Bremen strikers have voiced confidence that Super Eagles forward Victor Boniface will soon regain his scoring touch despite his goalless start at the club, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Claudio Pizarro, a Bremen legend with 153 goals in 320 games, acknowledged Boniface’s tough beginning but encouraged him to stay focused and keep working.
“He’s in a challenging phase right now, but he just has to keep pushing to show his quality again,” Pizarro told German outlet DeichStube. “Hopefully, he’ll start scoring for Werder soon — that would be important for both sides. Once he gets going, the goals will follow.”
Martin Harnik, who began his career at Bremen and went on to play for Düsseldorf, Stuttgart, Hannover and Hamburg, also compared Boniface to former Germany international Max Kruse. He believes the striker needs more freedom on the pitch to perform at his best.
“He’s clearly a special character,” Harnik said. “Like Max Kruse, he needs as much freedom as possible. If you let him off the leash, he’s a creative player who enjoys the game and will really help the team.”
Boniface, currently on a season-long loan from Bayer Leverkusen, has made nine appearances under manager Horst Steffen without scoring. His slow start, combined with concerns about fitness, diet and expectations, has drawn scrutiny from fans.
Nonetheless, the 2024 Bundesliga Rookie of the Year continues to enjoy strong backing from two of Bremen’s most respected former players as he works to rediscover his form at the Weser Stadium.
