An Ekiti State Magistrate Court has granted bail to human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi in a defamation case filed by legal expert Afe Babalola.
Former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore shared the update on his X handle on Monday, December 9. According to Sowore, Farotimi was granted bail set at N50 million, with a surety who must provide collateral in the form of landed property. The case has been adjourned to January 29, 2025.
Earlier reports indicated that Farotimi was arraigned on December 4 for allegedly publishing a book, Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System, in which he accused Babalola of corrupting the judiciary and procuring Supreme Court judgements, claims said to expose Babalola to “hatred, contempt, ridicule, and damage to his career.”
Farotimi pleaded not guilty to all 16 charges and was subsequently remanded in prison custody.
