AI Disruption in Engineering Raises Industry Concerns

AI disruption in engineering is becoming a growing concern as artificial intelligence continues to reshape traditional design and development processes. Aliko Dangote, President and Chief Executive of Dangote Industries Limited, warned that this shift could significantly transform how engineering work is carried out.

He noted that AI disruption in engineering may eventually replace certain design functions historically performed by human engineers.

Artificial Intelligence Impact on Engineering Design Processes

Dangote made these remarks during his induction as an Honorary Fellow of The Nigerian Academy of Engineering in Lagos, where he highlighted the expanding influence of artificial intelligence across multiple industries.

According to him, AI is already transforming global systems and could soon take over key aspects of engineering design.

“We are witnessing the impact of artificial intelligence in virtually all spheres of life. It is gradually replacing human capability and deep analytical thinking,” he said. “It is possible that AI will soon phase out engineering designs usually undertaken by human engineers.”

Engineering Adaptation to AI Disruption in Engineering

He urged engineers to take an active role in shaping how AI is applied within the profession, stressing that failing to respond to AI disruption in engineering could weaken the relevance of the field.

Dangote emphasised that engineering remains central to national development, describing it as the foundation of industrial progress.

“Engineering is more than a profession. It is the language of progress,” he said. “Every bridge, every power system, and every drop of fuel that drives an economy begins as an engineer’s work.”

Role of Engineers in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

He also highlighted the role of engineering in the growth of the Dangote Group, noting that its success is built on technical expertise and innovation.

According to him, thousands of engineers are employed across the group’s refinery, fertiliser, and industrial operations, making it one of Nigeria’s largest employers of engineering talent.

Dangote further explained that the company invests heavily in training engineers through its academy and international exposure programmes to bridge the gap between academic learning and industrial application.

Nigeria’s Engineering Future Amid AI Transformation

He warned that Nigeria must expand its engineering capacity to remain globally competitive, pointing to countries that have prioritised large-scale investment in technical education.

Speaking at the event, the President of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering, Prof. Rahamon Bello, described Dangote’s induction as recognition of his contributions to industrial development driven by engineering innovation.

He noted that the Dangote Refinery stands as one of the most advanced industrial projects in Africa, symbolising what engineering excellence can achieve.

Also speaking, Lagos State officials praised the refinery as a landmark achievement, highlighting its economic impact and job creation across the region.
