Defending champions England defeat Spain on penalties to clinch Women’s Euro 2025 title

England retained their Women’s Euro crown on Sunday after defeating Spain 3–1 in a penalty shootout, following a 1–1 draw after extra time at St Jakob-Park in Basel. Chloe Kelly calmly slotted home the winning penalty, helping the Lionesses avenge their 2023 World Cup final loss to Spain and secure back-to-back European titles.

Spain had taken the lead in the first half through Mariona Caldentey’s header and looked poised to repeat their triumph in Sydney. They dominated possession and dictated much of the play, but England stayed composed—just as they did when coming from behind against Sweden and Italy in the knockout stages.

Alessia Russo brought England level just before the hour mark with a well-timed header, and the score remained unchanged through extra time, leading to a decisive shootout. Spain faltered from the spot, missing three of their penalties, including one from reigning Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmatí, whose effort was saved.

Chloe Kelly, once again a game-changer off the bench, delivered the decisive blow. “I was cool, I was composed. I knew I was going to hit the back of the net,” she told the BBC.

The win cements manager Sarina Wiegman’s legacy, marking her third consecutive European Championship title—having previously won with the Netherlands in 2017 and England in 2022. “We said we can win by any means, and that’s what we have shown again today. I am so proud of the team and the staff. It is incredible,” Wiegman said. “Losing your first game and becoming European champions is incredible.”

For Spain, it was a painful defeat and a missed opportunity to add a European title to their 2023 World Cup triumph. Despite dominating the game, they failed to capitalise on their chances—a costly mistake against an England side known for resilience.

“I am in shock,” Bonmatí admitted to broadcaster TVE after the match, apologising for her missed penalty.
