EPL: Bruno Fernandes irreplaceable, says Amorim

by Admin

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has admitted it will be “impossible” to replace captain Bruno Fernandes after the midfielder was ruled out with a hamstring injury.

Fernandes was forced off during Sunday’s 2–1 Premier League defeat to Aston Villa and will miss Friday’s home clash against Newcastle. Amorim confirmed the Portugal international will be sidelined for several matches, though he stopped short of giving a precise return date, describing the setback as “not going to take a lot of time.”

Reports suggest Fernandes could return in time for the Manchester derby against City at Old Trafford on January 17, potentially limiting his absence to around five matches.

The injury comes at a challenging moment for United, who are already without attacking options Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo due to the Africa Cup of Nations. Midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, considered the most natural replacement for Fernandes, is also unavailable with a calf injury.

Speaking to the media, Amorim stressed that Fernandes’ value goes far beyond creativity.

“It is impossible to replace Bruno,” he said. “I told the team this morning. If there is any positive, it’s that others will need to step up.”

Amorim highlighted Fernandes’ leadership, tactical intelligence, and influence on the pitch as key reasons for his importance.

“It’s not just about creation,” he added. “At every set-piece, he organises the team. He understands every position on the pitch and pays attention to every detail. When substitutions are made, he’s always guiding players on where they should be.”

Fernandes’ absence is especially significant given his remarkable fitness record since joining United from Sporting in January 2020. In nearly six years at the club, he has missed just three matches through injury or illness, making this his longest spell on the sidelines.

United now face a demanding run of fixtures without their captain, with Amorim hoping other players can rise to the challenge until Fernandes makes his return.
