A Google executive has issued a chilling warning about the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, predicting that AI could match and even surpass human capabilities within the next decade.
Demis Hassabis, CEO of DeepMind, shared during an episode of 60 Minutes that scientists may develop Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) within five to ten years—a form of AI capable of performing any intellectual task a human can do.
According to Hassabis, AGI could be seamlessly integrated into everyday life by 2035. “We’ll have a system that really understands everything around you in very nuanced and deep ways,” he told host Scott Pelley.
He also expects a major leap in robotics, where machines will be able to mimic human actions more convincingly than ever before.
Though today’s AI hasn’t yet reached consciousness, Hassabis believes it’s possible that machines may one day become self-aware. However, he warned it might be hard to tell when that moment arrives.
“With machines—it’s all running on silicon,” he said. “So even if they behave like us and say the same things, it doesn’t necessarily mean they experience consciousness the same way we do.”
