Veteran actor and filmmaker Robert Redford has died at the age of 89.
According to Daily Mail, the Oscar-winning star passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday at his home in Utah, near Provo, as reported by The New York Times. His publicist later confirmed the news.
Redford was one of Hollywood’s most recognisable figures, starring in timeless classics such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and All the President’s Men. His career began on Broadway in 1963 with Barefoot in the Park, before transitioning to film, where he shared the screen with stars like Barbra Streisand and Jane Fonda.
In 1980, he directed Ordinary People, which earned him an Academy Award. He also went on to establish the Sundance Institute and played a pivotal role in turning the Sundance Film Festival into a world-renowned stage for independent filmmakers.
Even in his later years, Redford remained active in the industry, receiving countless honours throughout his lifetime, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016.
