Serena Williams, widely acknowledged as one of the most exceptional tennis players in history, seamlessly blended her illustrious sports career with a keen interest in business ventures. It was in 2014 that she introduced Serena Ventures, a venture capital fund, drawing from her extensive decade-long experience in investment pursuits.
Through Serena Ventures, Williams has cast her support behind numerous enterprises, with some ascending to the coveted status of unicorns. Her investment strategy is distinctly focused, targeting women and underrepresented founders, a commitment articulated on the fund’s LinkedIn profile.
In a recent TikTok video, as originally reported by AfroTech, Williams shared insights into her investment philosophy, reflecting on her over 14 years of entrepreneurial involvement alongside her tennis career. Her rationale for delving into venture funding stemmed from the arduous journey faced by black individuals and women in securing financial backing for their ventures. As a result, Serena Ventures boasts an impressive portfolio characterized by 79% underrepresented founders, 54% women founders, 47% Black founders, and 11% Latino founders.
Deeply perturbed by the stark reality that less than 2% of venture capital funding was allocated to women, and an even smaller fraction to people of color, Williams felt compelled to leverage her influence to effect change. Her resolve crystallized into a determination to establish a fund that would champion women and underrepresented entrepreneurs, bridging the gaping disparity in investment opportunities.
Williams’ investment endeavors have spanned a diverse array of industries, encompassing over 80 companies, among them renowned entities like Impossible Foods and MasterClass, the latter valued at an impressive $2.75 billion in 2021. Notably, she proudly notes that 14 of her portfolio companies have attained unicorn status, a testament to her discerning investment acumen and unwavering commitment to fostering innovation and diversity within the entrepreneurial landscape.
