Finland is ranked high among the countries with the best education system. Nordic universities have for a long time been renowned for their offer of free education and focus on the value of learning. High number of students from non-EU countries have for long benefited from the Nordic countries quality education.
However, the Nordic tradition of free tuition for non-EU students took a dramatic change when Denmark introduced tuition fee for non-Europeans in 2006 and Sweden followed suit in 2011. Accordingly, enrollment of overseas students fell sharp shortly after fee were introduced.
In Finland, tuition fee for non-EU students was introduced on 1 August 2017, following its neighbours footsteps.
In 2019, Diaspora Glitz Magazine covered a high-class wedding in Helsinki between a Nigerian and an Estonian. The wedding was attended by a crop of High-tech gurus from African backgrounds working for Nokia who graduated from Tampere University.
