Melania Trump voices support for abortion rights, despite her husband’s strong disapproval.

Former First Lady Melania Trump expressed her firm support for abortion rights in a video posted Thursday, stating there is “no room for compromise” when it comes to a woman’s “individual freedom.” Her comments follow excerpts from her forthcoming book, reported by The Guardian, where she emphasizes that abortion should be “free from any intervention or pressure from the government.”

In her video posted on X, Melania said, “Individual freedom is a fundamental principle that I safeguard. There is no room for compromise on this essential right that all women possess from birth: individual freedom. What does ‘my body, my choice’ really mean?”

Her stance on abortion rights diverges from her husband’s position, just weeks before the upcoming election. Donald Trump, who often takes credit for the overturning of Roe v. Wade, supports leaving abortion legislation up to individual states, though he has said he would veto a federal abortion ban if re-elected.

Melania Trump has remained largely absent from her husband’s third presidential campaign, only recently appearing in videos promoting her upcoming book. Her defense of abortion rights comes as Republicans face a challenging political landscape in the post-Roe era, with many pushing for strict bans in GOP-led states.

According to The Guardian, Melania’s book states, “Why should anyone other than the woman herself have the power to determine what she does with her own body? A woman’s fundamental right to individual liberty grants her the authority to terminate her pregnancy if she wishes.”

The former president has faced difficulties on the abortion issue throughout his campaign, most recently in Florida, where he shifted positions within 24 hours on a measure to expand abortion access. Though he continues to promote his role in appointing three conservative Supreme Court justices, he has acknowledged that the issue has not been politically advantageous for Republicans pushing for severe restrictions.

Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris and other Democrats have kept abortion central to their appeal to women voters, highlighting the state-level restrictions enabled by Trump’s court appointees. Harris spokesperson Sarafina Chitika pointed out that “more than one in three American women live under a Trump Abortion Ban,” threatening their health and freedoms.

Melania Trump is not the first Republican First Lady to voice support for abortion rights. Laura Bush, wife of former President George W. Bush, opposed overturning Roe v. Wade, and later reaffirmed her stance in a 2010 CNN interview. Barbara Bush, the mother of George W. Bush, also publicly opposed the inclusion of an anti-abortion stance in the GOP platform in 1992.
