The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has denied reports suggesting that Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle’s contract has been terminated.
Following Nigeria’s disappointing results in the March 2026 World Cup qualifiers, speculation arose regarding Chelle’s future with the team. However, a senior NFF official has labeled these rumours as false.
“There is nothing like that,” the board member, who spoke anonymously to Punch, stated. “As a board member, I can confirm that no discussions have taken place regarding the coach’s contract. It is all fake news.”
The official further clarified that the NFF’s executive committee has not held any meetings about Chelle’s future, as the coach is currently in Europe. His visit aims to engage with Nigerian players and persuade eligible talents to commit to the national team.
Among those Chelle is set to meet is Arsenal’s promising youngster, Ethan Nwaneri. The teenage star’s chances of switching allegiance to Nigeria have increased following his omission from England’s latest squad.
“The coach is in Europe to meet players, and Nwaneri is definitely on the list,” the source added.
Chelle, appointed in January on a two-year contract, has led the Super Eagles in two matches so far—a 2-0 win over Rwanda in Kigali and a 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in Uyo.
