Nigeria to study Egypt’s power generation – Minister

by Admin

The Federal Government has announced plans to learn from Egypt’s power generation and transmission expertise, describing the North African nation as a role model in the sector. It also reaffirmed its commitment to rural electrification and expanding electricity access.

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, made this known during a meeting in Abuja with the Egyptian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mohammed Fouad. A statement by the minister’s spokesperson, Bolaji Tunji, on Sunday, highlighted discussions on strengthening bilateral cooperation in energy expansion, particularly in renewable energy and rural electrification.

Adelabu praised Egypt’s achievements in energy infrastructure development, stating that Nigeria aims to learn from its experience in power generation, transmission, and distribution. He noted that Egypt’s progress influenced Nigeria’s engagements with Siemens to stabilise the power sector.

“Egypt has made significant advancements in energy transformation, and we are eager to collaborate and learn from your expertise. Our goal is to ensure reliable, stable, and affordable electricity for all Nigerians,” he said.

The minister also emphasised Nigeria’s efforts to improve electricity access in rural areas through renewable energy, citing economic challenges in extending the national grid.

“Many rural communities remain off-grid due to financial constraints, but we cannot ignore them. Our renewable energy programme is bridging this gap, with secured investments such as $750m from the World Bank’s DARES project and $190m from the Japan International Cooperation Agency,” he added.

Adelabu stressed Nigeria’s vast renewable energy potential, including solar, wind, and hydro resources, and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to harnessing them for sustainable power supply.

In response, Fouad expressed Egypt’s willingness to collaborate with Nigeria, particularly in addressing the metering gap and sharing best practices in energy access.

“Nigeria and Egypt share common goals, and there is great potential for partnership in the energy sector. We are committed to working together to achieve sustainable energy solutions for both countries,” he said.
