NNPC and Chevron announce new oil discovery in the Niger Delta.

by Admin

The NNPC Limited – Chevron Nigeria Limited Joint Venture (NNPC-CNL JV) has achieved a significant milestone with a new oil discovery following the successful drilling of the Meji NW-1 well. Located in Petroleum Mining Lease (PML) 49 within the shallow offshore area of the Western Niger Delta, this discovery is a notable addition to Nigeria’s energy landscape, especially under the PIA 2021 terms.

Chevron’s General Manager, Policy Government and Public Affairs, Olusoga Oduselu, revealed the news in a statement titled “NNPC-CNL Joint Venture successfully drills the Meji NW-1 Well.”

The well, spud on September 2, 2024, reached a total depth of 8,983 feet by September 13, encountering around 690 feet of hydrocarbons in Miocene sands. This success appraises an extension of the productive Meji field. Drilling operations were completed on October 2, with the rig departing soon after.

Chevron highlighted that this achievement aligns with its goal to continue developing Nigerian resources while supporting its broader global exploration strategy. This involves discovering new resources to extend the life of producing assets and deliver production with shorter development times.

The discovery reaffirms Nigeria’s strong offshore potential, providing a boost to the oil and gas sector. The NNPC-CNL JV reiterated its commitment to working with the Nigerian government and stakeholders to further develop the country’s oil and gas industry.

With Nigeria’s energy sector being crucial to the national economy, this discovery is expected to enhance production levels and increase investor confidence in the region’s untapped potential.
