Samson Siasia refutes applying for Super Eagles position

by Admin

Nigerian football stalwart, Samson Siasia, has vehemently refuted any suggestion that he applied for the vacant position of Super Eagles Head Coach. Siasia, who has been serving a suspension imposed by FIFA, expressed his dismay at the timing of the job advertisement, which coincided with his ongoing disciplinary sanction. In a candid statement to Completesports, he clarified, “I did not apply for the Super Eagles coaching role because I am well aware that FIFA has yet to lift the suspension on me. It defies logic that I, as a suspended individual, would even contemplate applying for such a prestigious position.”

Siasia further elaborated on his predicament, lamenting the missed opportunity due to his suspension, which is set to expire in August 2024. “Had the job opening arisen after August this year, I would have eagerly thrown my hat into the ring to lead the Super Eagles. It’s disheartening, but unfortunately, I find myself constrained by circumstances beyond my control,” he expressed with palpable regret, reflecting on his successful coaching tenure with Nigeria’s Olympic team, culminating in a silver medal at the Beijing Olympics.

Expressing his reservations about the prospect of hiring a foreign coach for the national team, Siasia advocated for the recognition of the wealth of coaching talent within Nigeria. “We should not overlook the abundance of qualified Nigerian coaches, both within the country and abroad. The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) must learn from past mistakes and prioritize the selection of a coach with proven results and the ability to manage the diverse egos of our foreign-based players,” he cautioned.

In particular, Siasia highlighted names like Finidi George, Emmanuel Amunike, and Salisu Yusuf, among others, as capable contenders for the role. “These individuals possess the requisite experience and understanding of Nigerian football culture to steer the Super Eagles to greater heights,” he asserted confidently, urging the NFF to conduct a thorough evaluation of all applicants before making a decision.
