An Upper Area Court in Ilorin, Kwara State, has granted singer Portable bail in the sum of ₦1 million.
The singer, known for his controversial persona, was arraigned on April 14 on charges including criminal defamation, intimidation, inciting public disturbance, and cyberstalking. His arrest followed a petition by veteran singer Okunola Saheed, popularly known as Osupa, who accused Portable of defaming him and making threats to his life.
According to the petition, Portable allegedly went on livestream to insult Osupa and falsely claimed that Osupa had removed his music from streaming platforms like Apple Music and Spotify.
During the court proceedings, Police Prosecutor Abubakar Issa asked the court to remand Portable in custody pending the conclusion of their investigation.
However, Portable’s counsel, Barr. Adebayo Isaac, argued against the remand request, stating that the police had already granted his client administrative bail the previous day. He emphasised that Portable is a well-known public figure with a fixed address and would be available for trial if granted bail.
Adebayo based his argument on Sections 172(1) and 165 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, urging the court to consider these provisions in making its decision.
In a brief ruling, Judge Sunday Adeniyi granted Portable bail in the sum of ₦1 million, with two sureties—one of whom must be the chairman of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN). The case was adjourned to April 30, 2025.
