Nigerian singer Oludipe Oluwasanmi David, widely known as Spyro, has stated that many gospel artists are in the music industry primarily to make money, just like their Afrobeats counterparts.
Speaking during a recent episode of Trending on Hip TV, hosted by Pascal, the self-proclaimed “Jesus boy” argued that there’s no real difference between gospel musicians and secular artists in terms of their financial motives.
“The people that claim to be gospel artists or gospel ministers are just artists—they are in the business to make money just like us in the Afrobeats industry,” he said.
Spyro also addressed the intense pressure faced by female artists in the music space. Using Tems as a positive example, he applauded her for maintaining her decency while rising to global fame.
“There is a lot of pressure on female artists to do crazy things. Tems is holding it down decently yet she is one of the biggest [female artists] in the world right now. She is decent. She has it together,” he said.
He added, “Sometimes, I’m just like, how is she able to do this? We should put Tems out there for our young ladies to be looking up to as a role model.”
