State of Emergency: Fubara Speaks Out, Urges Calm Following Suspension

by Admin

Governor Siminilayi Fubara has called on the people of Rivers State to remain peaceful and law-abiding following President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in the state.

President Tinubu’s decision, announced on Monday, March 18, follows prolonged political tensions in Rivers, including impeachment attempts against Governor Fubara.

As part of the emergency measures, President Tinubu appointed Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as the Sole Administrator of the state, suspending Governor Fubara, his deputy, and the Rivers State House of Assembly.

In a statement released on Tuesday, March 19, Governor Fubara reaffirmed his dedication to constitutional governance and the welfare of Rivers residents despite the ongoing crisis.

“Even in the face of the political impasse, we have remained committed to constitutional order and the rule of law, putting the interest of our people above all else,” he said.

He noted that his administration had adhered to peace agreements brokered by the presidency, reinstating resigned commissioners and complying with the Supreme Court’s judgment to restore normalcy. However, he accused the Rivers State House of Assembly of hindering efforts to establish lasting peace.

“My dear Rivers People,

I address you today with a deep sense of responsibility and calm as we navigate this challenging moment in our state’s political history.

Since assuming office, I have been guided by my constitutional oath and a strong sense of duty.

We have prioritised the protection of lives and property while ensuring the continuous progress of our dear state.

Even amid political tensions, we have upheld constitutional order and the rule of law, always putting the interests of our people first.

This is why, following Mr. President’s intervention, we swiftly implemented the agreed peace terms in good faith, including reinstating commissioners who had previously resigned of their own accord.

Furthermore, we promptly complied with the Supreme Court’s judgment upon receiving its certified true copy to restore normalcy to our state.

These actions were not taken for personal gain but to foster peace, unity, and stability in Rivers State.

Unfortunately, at every step, members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have frustrated our efforts, making genuine peace and progress difficult.

Despite political disagreements, governance has continued, salaries have been paid, and transformative projects have been executed to advance our state. Above all, Rivers State remains safe and secure under our leadership.

At this critical time, I urge all Rivers people to remain peaceful and law-abiding. We will engage all relevant institutions to uphold democracy and ensure Rivers State continues to thrive.

We are a resilient people, and together, we will face this challenge with wisdom, patience, and unwavering faith in the democratic process.”**
