The Swedish Football Association has dismissed manager Jon Dahl Tomasson after a disappointing start to their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.
Sweden sit bottom of Group B with just one point from four matches following Monday’s 1-0 loss to Kosovo. Despite boasting a strong attack featuring Liverpool’s Alexander Isak and Arsenal’s Viktor Gyökeres, the team have failed to impress — drawing with Slovenia and losing to both Kosovo and Switzerland in their opening fixtures.
In a statement, the FA said the decision, made on Tuesday and effective immediately, was “based on a lack of results in the World Cup qualifiers.”
“There is still a chance to make the playoffs in March, and our responsibility is to ensure we have the best possible conditions for reaching the World Cup finals,” said Simon Åström, president of the Swedish FA. “To achieve this, we believe a new leadership is needed in the form of a new coach.”
Sweden are set to face Switzerland away before hosting Slovenia in their final two qualifying matches, as they attempt to close the gap on second-placed Kosovo, who currently have seven points.
However, Sweden could still reach the play-offs even without finishing in the top two, thanks to their strong showing in the 2024–25 Nations League, where they topped their group.
The winners of each World Cup qualifying group will secure 12 of the 16 European spots for next summer’s tournament, with the runners-up advancing to the play-offs.
