President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he has ordered the dismissal of all remaining U.S. attorneys appointed by his predecessor, Joe Biden.
“Over the past four years, the Department of Justice has been politicized like never before,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
“Therefore, I have instructed the termination of ALL remaining ‘Biden Era’ U.S. Attorneys,” he added.
“We must ‘clean house’ IMMEDIATELY and restore confidence. America’s Golden Age must have a fair Justice System – THAT BEGINS TODAY!”
It is customary for a new president to replace U.S. attorneys appointed by their predecessor. There are 93 U.S. attorneys across the country’s 94 federal court districts, with two districts sharing one attorney. These attorneys serve as the top federal law enforcement officers in their regions.
Following Trump’s election victory in November, several U.S. attorneys appointed by Biden resigned in anticipation of being replaced.
Since taking office, Trump has overseen a sweeping shakeup of the Justice Department, which he has accused of unfairly prosecuting him. Several high-ranking officials have been fired, reassigned, or demoted.
Among those dismissed were members of special counsel Jack Smith’s office, which brought two now-abandoned criminal cases against Trump.
Additionally, the acting U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, a Trump appointee, resigned last week after the Justice Department requested the dismissal of corruption charges against New York Mayor Eric Adams.
